Questions to Ask your Potential College Roommate

Roommate Screening Questions (college roommate compatibility test)

These are basically the questions you need to ask your potential college roommate to determine if both of you will be a good pair to spend the year living together.

1. Have you lived with someone before?

It’s easier to get adjusted to the dorm lifestyle, if you have shared your living space with someone before. So, you might want to ask this question just to know if they had such experience.

If your roommate answers no, it might not be an immediate rejection as this usually is not a deal breaker. Learning to adapt and live with someone is something one can learn with this college experience.

2. Will you be going home often?

You may want to ask this if you want some extra space or alone time for yourself over the weekends. You especially need to ask this question if you are not comfortable with living alone in your dorm room too.

3. What is your college schedule like?

This doesn’t have to be a deal breaker too but you may want to ask this to get to know how long your roommate will stay in the room during the day.

4. How is your sleep schedule/pattern like?

Morning or night person? You wouldn’t want to have a roommate who stays up all night making noise when you are trying to sleep! So, this is an important question!

5. Are you okay with having guests come over to our room?

Whether you are an introvert who hates having other people in your living space or you are a people magnet who wants to turn your room into a lifestyle hub, you need to ask your roommate to make sure both of you are on the same page!

6. Are guests allowed to stay over for the night?

Make sure to discuss if family members, friends or boyfriends/girlfriends are allowed. Asking these questions will make sure there won’t be disagreements in the future.

7. How are your study habits like?

Make sure that both of your study habits are compatible with one another. It is important to know about this as studying is one of the things you will be spending most of your time doing in college.

8. How organised do you want the room to be?

Although you have your own areas within the room, it is still a common space (especially the toilet!) If you are a neat freak, you may not want to wake up to a large pile of mess on the other side of the room!

9. Warm or Cool vibes?

What kind of temperature does your roommate prefer to live in. Your preferred temperature might be freezing or too hot for others. So, make sure to settle this!

10. What are your pet peeves?

Compulsory question! What are all the things they get irritated by?

11. What is the ultimate deal breaker for you?

Is there something you would NEVER ever want your roommate to do?

12. Do you drink/smoke?

You may want to ask about this especially if you are not comfortable with having a tinge of cigarette smoke or the smell of alcohol in your living space.

I recommend to ask them face-to-face! But if they are someone you are not familiar with, just drop them a text! Ask if they have a roommate already.
