You can jump right to the tips if you know how to make oatmeal. But if you don’t, here’s how:

These instructions are for old-fashioned oats (rolled oats):

Stovetop:
Add ½ a cup of oats and 1 cup of liquid (water or milk) to a pan. Heat it up. Let it simmer over a medium-low heat and constantly mix so that the bottom won’t burn. Stop the heat when you get your preferred consistency and transfer it to a bowl.
Microwave:
Add ½ a cup of oats and 1 cup of liquid (water or milk) to a bowl. Then place it in a microwave without covering the bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes.

You know how to make basic oatmeal but how do you make it PERFECT? Here are my top tips to make oatmeal exciting and fun 🙂

Tips to make oatmeal for college students:

#1 add a banana!

Chop up a banana and add it when the mixture is starting to thicken. I love doing this because the banana becomes soft and nice and it goes so well with the oatmeal!

#2 stop the heat a minute before it becomes the right consistency

Oatmeal hardens over time and you don’t want it to cool down and turn too hard before you could finish assembling your toppings!

#3 use milk!

I know the directions on your packet of oats probably didn’t mention milk. But if you prefer your oatmeal to be thicker, then you have to add milk! I personally like my oatmeal to be really sticky, creamy and THICK so I only add milk and absolutely no water.

But if you want a normal regular consistency, then try ½ a cup of water and ½ a cup of milk!

#4 one more step before toppings!

Add in spices like cinnamon, nutmeg or cardamom! You can also mix in some vanilla, honey or maple syrup and give it a mix to flavour your oatmeal!

#5 BEST PART: toppings

You can technically have oatmeal with just simple brown sugar. But where’s the fun in that?

Go crazy with the things you want to add in your oatmeal bowl! Ok, not too crazy, you still want the oatmeal to shine >< But feel free to add sliced/dried fruits, berries, nuts or seeds etc, etc.

You can even add milk along the sides or have it with a scoop of yogurt!

Oatmeal is really my favourite comfort meal! It’s perfect to have it for breakfast or after a workout. But personally, I love to have some warm oatmeal in a cozy, rainy evening
