Reasons To Start A Blog While In College
Starting a blog is probably one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I highly recommend high school and college students to start a blog while in college. In today’s day and age, everything is becoming online. So, now is surely the BEST time to start a blog.
There are several other reasons to start a blog too so I decided to write about all the benefits of running a blog while in college. So, let’s dive right it in!
Reasons Why You Should Start A Blog In University
1. Learn Your Subject by Actively Teaching It
When you have a blog, you are positioning yourself as a voice of authority which makes you think and research more about the subject.
When you write about something, you need think about how to explain and communicate your points and ideas effectively. Along the way, you may develop your own strategies and frameworks.
You are also forced to organize your thoughts when you write a blogpost. Writing helps you internalize and understand a subject better. Overall, blogging helps you learn and get even more knowledgeable about the topic or niche.
2. Establish yourself as an “authority”
A blog can enhance your professional image. As you blog more and more, you eventually become an “expert” and be seen as an authority in that specific niche. Your blog can show people what you are all about, similar to a business card.
Thus, blogging can create opportunities such as getting invited to events and conferences because you are seen as an “expert” in the niche.
A common misconception: You don’t have to be the best in the world to teach someone something. Even if you are still learning, you can teach someone who is behind you. As you learn more and more, you can become more of an “authority” in that area.
3. Make Valuable Connections (aka networking)
Networking is important, especially for fresh college graduates, and everyone knows that by now. But it is so much easier to network if you have a blog.
Running a blog can introduce you to some amazing and talented people. From fellow bloggers to web designers to social media strategists to online business owners, you get to connect with other people, thus expanding your network.
You also have a more legitimate reason to reach out to other amazing people to interview or speak to them when you have a blog.
4. Improve Your Writing Skills
This might seem like a “duh” point but writing is such a valuable skill that has a market for.
Even if you don’t end up doing blogging full time, the fact that you have a blog shows your college admission board and companies that you have good writing skills. Being able to communicate and articulate well on paper is a skill companies would want their employees to have.
So, writing skills are surely important. AND blogging is a great way to practice and develop that skill.
5. Learn e-skills, technical and business skills
Website designing, branding, copywriting, SEO optimization, using WordPress, formatting in HTML, content creation, designing, social media strategizing are great skills you can learn when you create a blog.
These e-skills and technical skills that you self learnt are impressive to include in resumes and mention in interviews too.
6. Blogging is a Productive Distraction
It is just not possible to study 24/7. So, in your free time, you will tend to do other things to occupy yourself. Why not use that time to blog instead? It will be a much more productive way of spending your free time 🙂
7. Personal SEO Really Matters
In today’s day and age, personal SEO matters a lot. Basically, it is how you appear in search results when someone search your name up. It is really impressive when your very own blog website pops up instead of just a regular Facebook page.
Your blog website will create a positive first impression of you and that is great!
8. Stand Out
Only 1 percent of Internet users actively create new content. By starting your blog website and posting content regularly, you are standing out from the rest which is useful in today’s competitive economy.
Blogs are like your resumes these days. People can see what you are interested in and what you are good at just by looking at your blog. Linking to your website in your resume surely looks great.
Whether it is for college admission or job application, having a blog helps you stand out from the rest.
9. You can earn money!
This is a one of the most common reasons why people start blogs in the first place. Blogging is a really good business. It is a great way to generate passive income. Who doesn’t want that!
But let me clarify that it takes time before you are able to monetise your blog. You have to slowly build up a community of readers and get consistent traffic to your website before you can start earning big bucks from your blog.
This doesn’t have to be your full-time job though. Many actually blog part time. Blogging is a great side hustle. It is always a good idea to have multiple income streams so you should consider starting a blog early.
If you get serious and commit more time and effort into it, you can earn couple thousand dollars per month!
You can monetise your blog in several ways. You can earn from ads, affiliate sales, product sales, sponsorships etc.
So, are you going to start a blog? Do you plan to monetize and run a business with your blog?
